Salute To The New Age Startup’s Unicorn Women Of India

We all have a woman in our lives that we love and look upto. It is also a woman that would provide us with the most important things in life. A mother’s love, a sister’s friendship, and a partner’s support. However, a woman can be way more than just the emotional relationships around her. We talk about equality but how often do we actually follow it? Do we personally respect our female superiors at the workplace as much as the male ones? Probably not. Thankfully, with or without validity and support, women are succeeding in their personal as well as professional lives. They are taking bigger risks with higher confidence than ever, while still staying humble.

Let’s have a look at the journey of some of the women who against all odds, dominate the business world today – Unicorn Women Of India.

Radhika Ghai Aggarwal – Shopclues.com

Being an “army brat” and switching about 10 schools across India, Radhika gained essential life & social skills at a young age. Her exposure to entrepreneurship came early with her father turning to it after retirement. She has a strong academic background with experience in companies such as Goldman Sachs and Nordstrom. These made her learn her company’s “customer supremacy” mindset. In 2011, she started Shopclues with a customer centric approach. The website had a buyer protection policy with simplified returns. Customer trust is important to her even if it comes at a price. One such example is when a merchant canceled on them for 200 bouquets of flowers on Valentines. To make up, Shopclues shipped out soft toys, chocolates, and a handwritten apology to each affected customer. Radhika, while being a mother of two, became India’s first woman to enter the Unicorn Club and a role model for many.

Falguni Nayar – Nykaa

An alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad and former MD of Kotak Mahindra Capital Company, Falguni Nayar founded Nykaa when she was almost 50. By ending such a successful career, she automatically attracted heavy criticism from people around her. However, she was determined to not let it affect her. Nykaa saw an opportunity in the fragmented beauty sector and filled the gap with a mix of affordable and luxury products. Nykaa was listed at $13 billion in November 2021, making Nayar the richest self-made woman in India. One of only two self-made female billionaires in India, she is among the top 20 richest people in the country with a net worth of $4300 million. She definitely is in every sense a Unicorn Women Of India.

Dr. Garima Sawhney – Pristyn Care

Doctor turned entrepreneur Garima Sawhney began her journey as a junior doctor at a hospital. There she realized that a gap existed between the patients and doctors.  She wasn’t satisfied with her job and realized that neither were the patients. She wanted to contribute a lot more and the patients wanted a doctor that understood them and their problems. Garima quit her job to dedicate all her time to Pristyn Care. The company made a lot of donations during the Covid 19 pandemic, yet the operations didn’t suffer. Infact, the company grew and there were no layoffs. Garima saw not just an opportunity, but also a way to make lives better.

Gazal Alagh – Mamaearth

Born and raised in Gurgaon, Ghazal Alagh has always been interested in entrepreneurship. Before starting Mamaearth with her husband, she had already started two other companies, one of which did well. The idea behind Mamaearth came out of Ghazal’s care for her son. He had a skin condition and the couple was unable to find anything that worked. They discovered that most of the chemicals used in products these days were actually toxic to a baby’s skin. The couple invested INR 90 lakhs with the aim to create natural products for young infants. The company, from selling 6 products in the first few years, has now grown to selling over 100 products. Ghazal Alagh is now one of the top 10 women artists in India and the perfect example of a mother going beyond limits for her child.

Ruchi Kalra – Ofbusiness

Being the only female in the group of 8 cofounders, Ruchi Kalra has proven skills both academically and professionally. After quitting her career of 9 years with Mckinsey, along with her 7 co founders, she started OfBusiness solely because of the passion for building something from scratch.   She gives the credit for her success to strong persistence and perseverance. Rising above any criticism or inequality, she is now leading the entire company as their CFO. Her business success proves her efficiency
