In 2020/21 football clubs have had to adapt to new methods to generate revenue because of the pandemic. Empty stadiums have deeply impacted the revenue of these glamorous clubs. Although it is not all bad as broadcasting revenue increased to record levels (€4.5 billion).
Deloitte once again posted the standings of its Football Money League table and to the surprise of many, Manchester City came out on top.
Premier League winner Manchester City dethroned the local rivals Manchester United from the top spot & became only the fourth club to reach the top of the charts.

The Abu Dhabi backed Manchester City increased their income by 17%. Which boosted them to the top of the list ahead of Real Madrid in second. However, Manchester City’s sponsorship deals which account for a big chunk of their revenue, have been nothing short of controversy. Such as clubs main sponsor Eithad, having close ties to the Abu Dhabi owners.
The Impact of Social Media
Social Media plays a big role in generating revenue for these clubs, roughly 50% of the world’s population are football fans. With no fans in the stadium the use of social media to generate that lost revenue became essential. Man City generated the highest increase in their social media followers by producing engaging content. The two Spanish clubs ( Real Madrid & Barcelona) top the list for the most followers on social media followed by Manchester United in third. It is estimated that average commercial revenue per social media follower for the top 25 clubs is roughly €2.15.
